Crafts and Brooms

Hi there! Nora Woolf here, the Broom Maker at Woolf Den Homestead. Thanks for your interest in my brooms!

As a craftsperson, I have always been attracted to making functional art. Over the years I have carved wooden spoons, made furniture from scrap wood, hooked rugs, and other various crafts. A few years ago I came across an opportunity to learn how to make traditional Appalachian style hand whisks and thought it would be fun to try to make a few holiday gifts. After making a few, I ordered 50 lbs. of broom corn and launched into learning the craft.

I love that I can use natural materials to create useful everyday objects that are beautiful enough to display on the wall of your home, office, shop, camper, etc. I hope you find as much joy in these brooms as I do.

“What materials are used for your brooms?

On the homestead we focus a lot on where our “stuff” comes from in an effort to reduce our environmental impact. I have taken this ethos into my broom making as well working hard to ensure that the materials used are reducing the commodity chain impact as much as possible.

  • Sorghum vulgare, also known as broom corn, came to North America with Benjamin Franklin and has been a staple crop ever since. It’s primary use and focus is to supply broom makers the fiber needed to make their craft.
  • Polished cotton cordage from Maine Thread Company – allows for a finished look while also keep the hand brooms compostable at the end of their life. Woven whisks and hearth/cobweb/full sweeps are all woven with a waxed nylon cord made by the Main Thread Company.
  • Leather strap – all of our leather is scrap from our friend at Rhubarb Leather. The leather is from cows that were raised at local farms including Bread and Butter Farm and Shelburne Farms. It feels important to us to use the whole animal and have their story continue to be told. If you prefer to not have a leather handle, just ask! We are happy to substitute it with another fiber.
  • Hardwood handles sourced from our homestead during our firewood processing. Cured in our home and finished using a drawknife, spokeshave, and pollisior to create a finished look.

Broom Classes and Workshops

After taking a break in 2024 from hosting gatherings, we are excited to kick off the near year and host many broom making classes and workshops!

Take a look at our Gatherings page for more information about the various gatherings and workshops we are hosting. We will be hosting broom workshops in January, March, May, July, September, and November.

I also travel and teach – if you have a location and are interested in hosting a Whisk Broom workshop, let’s chat! I would love to teach your community how to make this beautifully functional piece of art! Please email me and we can start the conversation

Woolf Den Homestead Brooms as Gift Economy

In an effort to push beyond the norms of our capitalist structure we have transitioned our broom business to operate through a gift economy.

How it works: Under the description of each broom there is information regarding the time in which it takes to make each style (keeping in mind this is years of practice and learning).

When you find a broom that fits your need, we invite you to consider finding an exchange that feels good. This could be in service (example: come join us for some work on the homestead or you offer a service we may need), good (perhaps you have an item you make or have you could offer in exchange), or a gift of financial support.

We are excited to break free from our typical exchange of good for money. These brooms are a gift to us all. We want you and/or your loved one to have one that feels good. So, we invite you to join us in this practice of gifting.

Types of brooms

I currently do not sell brooms through an online system (we are little old school that way). If you are interested in a broom and unable to come see the brooms on the homestead or at local retailer, I invite you to email  me to learn the current inventory or to place an order.

If you are interested in a wholesale order, please email to receive our wholesale offerings.

Color options
There are over 7 colors to choose from for hand whisks. All the cotton cord comes from Maine Thread Company:

Red – Orange – Light Blue – Denim – Navy – Brown – Tan

Pot Scrubber/Cake Tester

Made with the Polished Cotton Cord, this pot scrubber is perfect to clean your cast iron and is completely compostable when you’re done. Just add a little bit of water with this scrub and your cast iron will be clean and keep its coating! Eventually, you’ll need to compost this scrubber – however this could take months or years depending on how often you clean your pans.

Cake Testers are the same design with a little more broom corn (measuring closer to 8″ long). Hang this tool by your kitchen stove and you’ll never need to look for your tooth picks to check the done-ness of your baked good! Just break off a piece of the cake tester and test away!

The most utilitiarian broom there is – the round whisk – with a beautiful woven handle. The handle is woven from the stalk of the sorghum. This provides a nice grip for your everyday hand sweeping needs. It can be stitched flat or kept in a round.

Hearth and/or Kids Broom

A smaller version of the Full Sweep. This broom is crafted on a hardwood handle from our homestead. These brooms are perfect to save your back around the woodstove, on the stairs, or for the smaller family members to help with household chores.

Full Sweep House Broom

A traditional Appalachian style house broom. Designed to get all the grit – hair, dust, and debris from your floors. The broomcorn will sweep your home better than you’ve ever experienced! Made with the stalk and hurl, this broom will keep your house clean and become an art installation on your wall. The hardwood handle is sourced from our homestead when we harvest trees for firewood.

Cobwebber

The smartest broom design there is (as far as I’m concerned). This broom (pictured on the right) is on a hardwood handle and is stitched in a round, so you can reach high into all the corners of your ceiling and around art work. If you are tired of fighting with the vacuum cleaner to get those cobwebs, this is the answer to your troubles!
